The music world is mourning the loss of DJ Unk, the rapper and DJ behind the 2006 smash hits “Walk It Out” and “2 Step,” who has passed away at the age of 43. His family announced the heartbreaking news on January 24, 2025, via social media.
Though the cause of his death hasn’t been revealed, his wife, Sherkita Long-Platt, shared an emotional tribute on Facebook, asking for privacy during this difficult time. She wrote, “Please respect me and my family. I just lost my husband, and my kids just lost their father. Our life will never be the same. I LOVE YOU, ANTHONY FOREVER.”
Korey “Big Oomp” Roberson, who signed DJ Unk to his first record deal 25 years ago, confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “DJ Unk was more than a legendary artist—he was the cornerstone of our label. His hit songs, including ‘Walk It Out’ and ‘2 Step,’ left a lasting mark on the industry. His energy, creativity, and commitment to music will inspire generations to come,” Roberson wrote.
The Legacy of DJ Unk

Born Anthony Leonard Platt, DJ Unk got his start as a member of the Southern Style DJs before signing with Big Oomp Records in 2000. His debut single, “Walk It Out”, released in 2006, became an anthem, climbing to No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching No. 2 on the Hot Rap Songs and Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. His debut album, Beat’n Down Yo Block!, followed shortly after, peaking at No. 21 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.
The success of “Walk It Out” extended beyond the charts, becoming a cultural phenomenon. DJ Unk once expressed his amazement at its impact, saying it was used in workouts, churches, and even inspiring André 3000 to feature on its remix. “It was like a dream come true,” he shared, comparing the collaboration to working with a legend like Michael Jackson.
His second hit, “2 Step”, also achieved remarkable success, landing in the Top 10 of multiple charts. These tracks cemented DJ Unk’s place as a pioneer of the snap subgenre in Southern hip-hop. He later released a follow-up album, 2econd Season, in 2008, which further showcased his unique style and musical influence.
In 2024, his impact on music continued when GloRilla sampled his track “Hold On Ho” for her hit song “Hollon”, proving that DJ Unk’s influence transcended generations.
